Remote desktop from your phone: when you need it and when it gets in the way

Remote desktop on your phone looks logical: your entire computer is in your pocket. In practice, it turns out that it solves half of the problems worse than more boring methods. Let's figure out when you really need it.

When the desktop is indispensable

A windowed program that has no other interface. Graphic editor, specialized client, accounting program. There is no choice here: you need a screen.

See what's happening. Is the render frozen? The dialogue shows whether the installation has reached completion. One look is enough, and for the sake of it you don’t mind either traffic or inconvenience.

A one-time action in someone else's program. Press one button, confirm the window, save the file. It’s faster to look and poke than to remember the command.

When he gets in the way

When you work and don't watch. The interface is designed for the mouse: small elements, menus, drag and drop. It’s hard to hit them with your finger, and scaling throws off the coordinates.

When text is needed. Read the log, find the line, copy a piece of the output. The text in the picture cannot be highlighted, only rewritten with the eyes.

When the connection is bad. The screen is a stream of frames. On the metro and on a weak signal, the picture fades, and along with it the meaning is lost.

When traffic matters. A minute of screen time costs more than an hour of console work. If you have limited mobile internet, this is noticeable.

What to replace if work is needed

For most tasks, the “console plus files” combination is suitable.

The console decides startup, restart, reading logs and any actions with the system. Text, not a picture: sparingly, read, copied.

The file manager decides everything else: look, edit, download, upload.

The screen remains the third tool, for cases when graphics are indispensable.

What to check for any solution

Do I need a public IP address? If so, you most likely won't get it at home. A good scheme works when the connection is established by the computer itself.

Does it survive the break? The phone changes networks constantly. The work shouldn't die with the connection.

What about the keys? The console requires Esc, Ctrl, Tab and arrows. If they are hidden in a submenu, you will suffer.
