Terminal from your phone: how to open the console of your computer

September 10, 2026 · read 5 minutes

The console on the phone is not needed for beauty. Run the build, look at the logs of the failed service, restart the process, respond to the agent who is waiting for confirmation. All this is done in two lines, for which it would be stupid to return home.

There is a way, and it has been known for a long time: an SSH client. The problem is that it doesn't work as well as you'd expect on a phone, and here's why.

What breaks

The connection breaks, and the work dies with it. You left the subway, the phone changed the network, the connection was closed. Everything that was performed inside the session died along with it. Under treatment tmux or screen, but they need to be launched in advance, and they are usually remembered after the first loss.

There are not enough keys. The console constantly needs Esc, Ctrl, Tab and arrows. The mobile keyboard does not show them, applications bring out an additional panel, and it is inconvenient to hit small buttons with your finger. This is especially noticeable in programs with a text interface: editors, file managers, console agents.

You don't get the scrolling. The program that draws the screen itself intercepts gestures. You try to scroll through the output, but you end up in a menu item. The history lives in the scroll buffer, which still needs to be reached.

The screen jumps when turning. Changing the window size causes the program to redraw itself. Part of the story may be lost, and you will end up at the beginning of the output instead of where you read.

How to fix it

The process must live separately from your session. Then the connection breakdown ceases to be an event: they returned, connected, and saw the same screen. This is exactly what does tmux, and this is what should be the default, not a user exploit.

The connection must be initiated by the computer. Then you don’t need a public IP address or port forwarding on the router. The machine itself communicates with the intermediate server, and you connect there too.

The keys should be under your thumb. Esc, Ctrl, Tab and arrow keys are not hidden in submenus. This is a little thing that decides whether you will use the console on your phone or not.

Window size changes need to be filtered. Small jumps in height caused by the keyboard and browser address bar should not force the program to redraw everything. Otherwise, every opening of the keyboard will cost you your place in history.

What to choose

If the task is one-time, any SSH client and the habit of running it will suffice tmux first team.

If you return to the console every day, it's worth picking up a tool that already does everything listed above. We made ours precisely because of this pain: the terminal lives on the computer, and not in the application, so it survives both the loss of the network and the closing of the application. Esc, Ctrl and arrows are placed in a row below the screen. The history is not lost when you turn the phone.

Try it

Opens in the browser, no application required. The first 7 days are free and without a card, then 900 ₽ per month.

About safety

Check three things for any solution. Who sees the contents of the session if the traffic goes through someone else's server. How to revoke access from a lost phone. What happens after rebooting the computer: will access return on its own?

How much does it cost

Working with a computer on your home network is free forever. Internet connection is included in the subscription, 900 rubles per month, the first seven days are free and without a card.

If the console is needed not for a home computer, but for a server that works around the clock, look at the script analysis agent on your server.
